12ozProphet Studio Blackbook Sessions

Blackbook sessions have long been a staple of graffiti culture. Ever since writers gathered around the benches at the 149th Street Grand Concourse subway station in The Bronx back in the late 1980s to pass around their books and meet one another, the blackbook has been an integral part of every writer’s inventory. Much like the sketchbooks that often accompany classical art, blackbooks display the inner workings of a graffiti writer’s creative process and visual expression.
In the 12ozProphet Blackbook Session Series we look to offer some insight into this process and to highlight what makes those 110 hard bound pages so special. We want to faithfully document a piece of graffiti culture that every writer cherishes and to share these intimate creative moments with a broader audience, providing access to a fundamental part of the graffiti subculture that isn’t often seen outside of the closed circle of its participants.
